Indian States & Capitals

Currently India has twenty nine states and seven union territories. The country is distinctly divided into North India, South India, East India and West India. From an inbound tourism perspective, the most popular states in the North are Rajasthan with its capital Jaipur, Uttar Pradesh with its capital Lucknow and Punjab with its capital Chandigarh. While there are several important cities to be visited in Rajasthan, in Uttar Pradesh the most famous ones are Agra (for the Taj Mahal), Varanasi and Lucknow. Punjab has Amritsar known for its famous Golden Temple. The country's capital city of New Delhi is also towards the Northern part of India.

Western India comprises of the states of Maharashtra with its capital city Mumbai, Goa with its capital Panjim and Gujarat with its capital Gandhinagar. South India has five main states including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Karnataka. Kerala's capital city is Trivandrum or Thiruvananthapuram. Hyderabad is the capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and Chennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Karnataka's capital is Bengaluru, earlier known as Bangalore.

East of India is divided into Eastern and North Eastern states. While Eastern part has the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha, the North East comprises of the seven states called as the 'Seven Sisters'. These include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. A major connecting city for the East is Kolkata which is the capital city of West Bengal.

Besides the above, the central parts of the country has the state of Madhya Pradesh with its capital city Bhopal. M.P. is mostly visited for its several famous wildlife parks.
