When Akbar seeked the blessings of this saint, he was blessed with 3 sons and thus to honor the saint, he built this magnificent city around 37 kms from Agra. Akbar also named one of his sons after the name of this sage - ‘Salim’. He took great interest in the building of this city and greatly influenced the architectural style. It took several years in its construction but the Mughal rulers could not rule here for a long period. When functional, this city did serve as a seat of governance for the Mughal rulers and was the capital of Mughal empire. However, legend goes that due to an injustice done in the court of Akbar, whereby he wrongly sentenced punishment to a female dancer for theft, this city was cursed by her father. The dancer was named Zarina and she was accused of theft of a golden bangle belonging to the Queen. It was a conspiracy by a fellow member in the service of the Queen. She did not steal the bangle and could not bear the accusation, ending her life. After her death, her father cursed the king and there was scarcity of water in the kingdom due to which the emperor had to abandon the city within two decades of their rule. Fatehpur Sikri gradually emerged as a must visit destination among the sightseeing places near Delhi and Agra. Constructed by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and completed by Sawai Jai Singh I, the Amer fort is a beautiful fusion of art and architecture. While the interior walls depict expressive painting scenes with carvings, precious stones and mirror settings, the breathtaking Maota Lake in the foreground adorns the grand structure.
