Khajuraho is a popular tourist destination in India. It is known for its ancient temples famous for its erotic architecture and depict some of the finest art in the world.The temples displays fine sculptures and exceptional architectural skill making them a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India and is considered to be one of the ‘seven wonders’ of India.
Theses temples were built over a span of 200 years and today, they have gained popularity due to their explicit depiction of sexual life during medieval times. The Khajuraho temple complexis situated in a beautifulparkland. Today, it is an archaeological park with mowed grass, rose beds and ornamental trees. People visit the complex every evening to enjoy the sound and light show which is held in the open lawn area within the complex. One of the famous dance festival in India is the Khajuraho Dance Festival is organized every year in February. Visitors enjoy various classical Indian dance performance set against the backdrop of the Chitragupta or Vishwanath Temples.
The Cultural dance show in Khajuraho showcases different classical Indian dance styles such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, etc., which are performed by young talented artists. These dance styles are from different states across India. For instance the ‘Kathak’ dance belongs to North India whereas Kuchipudi and Odissiis from the southern parts of the country. The ‘Kathak’ form of dance originated from the word ‘Kathakars’ which means ‘story tellers’ and it was created by the traveling bards of ancient northern India, especially from the cities of Lucknow and Varanasi.
These shows are organized in an air conditioned theatre with comfortable seats. There are two shows every evening, each for a duration of 60 minutes.
Best Time to visit
The best months to visit Khajuraho are the winters between November and March. Central India sees very hot temperatures in summer and hence summer months of April to June are not recommended.
