Formerly known as Senkadagalapura, Kandy is considered as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. The city of Kandy is situated in the midst of tropical region and is surrounded my many tea plantations. In the year 1988, Kandy was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Festival of the Tooth, originally known as The Kandy EsalaPerahera, is a grand festival celebrated in the city of Kandy every year. This festival is celebrated to pay homage to the holy tooth relic of Buddha. The festive celebration involves traditional local dances like whip-dances, fire-dances, Kandyan dances and various other cultural dances. Elephants are dressed in decorated garments and ornaments for the procession. To sum it up, Kandy is a great place to experience the culture &cuisine of this island country. The major attraction sites in Kandy are The temple of Tooth, Kandy Lake &Peredeniya Botanical garden. As per the Buddhist community, the temple of the Tooth is considered to be the most sacred places of worship in the whole world. Tourist from across the world visit this temple to offer their prayers and view the daily rituals. Next to this temple lies the Kandy lake. It is basically an artificial lake and is considered one of the prime tourist location. The Peredeniya Botanical garden is an fourteenth century ancient garden which houses more than three hundred varieties of orchids. Apart from these popular tourist points of interest, there are many other attractions such as the royal palace, tea museum, spice gardens, a thirteenth century Gadaladeniya Temple, a fourteenth century Embekke temple &Lankatilaka temple and many Buddhist temples.
Best Time to visit
Like the other cities in Sri-Lanka, Kandy can also be visited throughout the year but monsoons can effect the sightseeing and can be avoided. Monsoons last from June to October. Post monsoons, it is a good time as the area gets lush green, waterfalls are full and so are the lakes which add to the beauty of the landscape.
